Subsidy Removal: FG, Labour set up committees, to reconvene within eight weeks
As the effects of the subsidy removal still bites hard, The Federal Government met with representatives of the labour congress at the presidential villa on Monday to resume negotiation.
A steering and technical committe was set up to further look at ways of cushioning the effects of subsidy removal on Nigerians. Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy Dele Alake confirmed this development.
According to him, “As we assured in the last meeting we had, when labour called off their planned strike, we held a meeting today. We went through all the demands that labour had tabled, that is government and the labour unions last time.
He further more stated that ” At today’s meeting, both parties went through the list and we ticked off the viable ones which are now broken into three categories: those that can be addressed urgently, and those that can be achieved in the medium term and long term.”
In his words, ” Work groups have been constituted at the meeting held today. A steering committe has been set up which will serve as a clearing house and there are other committess comprising both government and labour parties. They will work harmoniously to ensure swift resolution to all the demands tabled by the labour and what we (government) call interventions,”
Also confirming the development, Joseph Ajero, The NLC President and the Trade Union President Festus Osifo affirmed that A steering committe has been set up and that the committe will be starting work immediately and compile a general assessments within a period of eight weeks.
However, the Trade Union president remarked that, the committes were yet to receive a terms of reference.
