Stewart Stern, the legendary screenwriter of “Rebel Without a Cause” has died at the age of 92, in a hospital in Seattle (Washington). The news has been released by the Western Writers Guild of the United States. “He lived many lives and should remain among us,” declares the president of the entity. He earned two Oscar nominations.

Born March 22, 1922, New Yorker Stewart Henry Stern was the nephew of Adolph Zukor, the legendary founder of Paramount. He fought in the infantry during World War II when he was decorated for his valor during the Battle of the Bulge.

After graduating from the University of Iowa, he got off to a good start in film in 1951 with Teresa , a drama starring Pier Angeli , which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. After a season focused on television, his second film work was the legendary Rebel Without a Cause , starring James Dean .

Subsequently, Stewart Stern dedicated himself to teaching, and did little to film, in titles such as Death’s Gorge , His Excellency the Ambassador and Raquel, Raquel , for which he received another opportunity to win the golden statuette. He concluded his career by writing several telefilms, including the version of The Glass Menagerie that starred Katharine Hepburn .

He is survived by his wife, Marilee Stiles Stern. Filmmaker Jon Steven Ward shot the 2005 documentary Going Through Splat: The Life And Work Of Stewart Stern, which chronicles Stern’s life. The director and screenwriter Robert Burke prepares another similar one about the screenwriter, entitled “Stewart Stern Unwritten”.
