The late athlete was born on February 14, 1973, as Stephen LaTreal McNair in a small tin-roofed house in Mount Olive, Mississippi, USA. He had not provided any information about his parents or his early years. He then grew up with his four brothers: Fred, Jason, Michael and Tim. Regarding his education, he attended Mount Olive High School where he played in different sports. In the 1991 MLB Entry Draft, he was selected by the 35th-round Seattle Mariners.

He chose Alcom State University over the University of Florida wanting to play as a quarterback. During this time, he became a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. His professional football career began in 1995 when the Houston Oilers selected him overall in the 1995 NFL Draft by new head coach Jeff Fisher.

During the 1999 season, the Oilers officially changed their name to the Titans and were diagnosed with an inflamed disc as a result of the Titans; win against the Cincinnati Bengals and needed surgery. During the 2000-2001 seasons, he did not start the first of two annual games due to a sternum injury. During the 2003 season, he became the youngest player in NFL history to pass for 20,000 yards and rush for 3,000 yards.
