The veteran entertainer was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas, USA. He was born as the son of parents Mary Lee Stewart and Glenn Vernon Martin. His late father worked as a real estate salesman and aspiring actor. He grew up in Inglewood, California with his sister Melinda Martin. Then the family moved to Garden Grove and grew up in a Baptist family. Also, he is of mixed British, Scottish, Welsh, Scottish-Irish, German, and French ethnicity.
For his education, he attended Garden Grove High School where he was a cheerleader. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in Santa Ana College and took courses in acting and English poetry. Also, as a teenager, his first job was at Disneyland where he sold guides on the weekends and full-time during summer vacations that lasted three years. By the year, he learned several magic tricks and took paid employment at the magic shop in Fantasyland.
While in college, he teamed up with high school classmate Kathy Westmoreland and performed in comedies and productions at the Bird Cage Theater. He then joined California State University to pursue his philosophy. But in 1967, he transferred his major to theater. And while continuing his studies, he appeared in an episode of the show “The Dating Game”. However, he did not complete his studies and dropped out at the age of 21.

In his difficult days, he landed a job as a writer in 1967 which he secured with the help of then-girlfriend Nina Goldblatt. She was a dancer on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” show. At the age of twenty-three, he wrote for ‘The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour’ and ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour’.
He became popular as a comedian in the mid-1970s and made frequent appearances as a stand-up comedian. It includes shows like “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and HBO’s “On Location.” During this year, he released his comedy album ‘Platinum’. The track ‘Excuse Me’ from his debut album ‘Let’s Get Small’ established a national catchphrase. Subsequently, his other album ‘A Wild and Crazy Guy’ became a biggest hit which reached number 2 on the sales chart in the United States, selling one million copies.
However, he quit doing comedies in 1981 to pursue his acting career. Although he began to appear in 1972 with minor roles. He began his acting career in late 1970 with minor roles in films like ‘Another Nice Mess’ and ‘The Absent-Minded Waiter’. Then he worked in a comedy movie ‘The Jerk’ which became a huge hit with over $100 million made on around $4 million. Then he appeared in three more Reiner-directed comedies ‘The Jerk: Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983) and ‘All of Me (1984)’.
He worked as a screenwriter and executive producer for films like “Three Amigos (1986)”, “Roxanne (1987)”, “LA Story (1991)”, “A Simple Twist of Fate (1994)”, “The Pink Panther “, and many others. Her television credits include various characters from Netflix’s ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour’, ‘The Carol Burnett Show (1978),’ ‘Twilight Theater (1982),’ ‘Oh, Hello On Broadway’, among others.

As a writer, he wrote a full-length play ‘Picasso au Lapin Agile’ in 1993. He also wrote various plays for ‘The New Yorker’ in the 1990s. He later wrote ‘The Underpants’, ‘ Shopgirl’, ‘The Pleasure of My Company’ and the Disney movie ‘Magic Camp’, and many more. In 2007, he published a memoir “Born Standing Up” and listed it as one of Time Magazine’s Top 10 Non-Fiction Books.

Martin is also a veteran musician who started playing the banjo when he was around 17 years old. He included an all-instrumental jam on his comedy album ‘Comedy Is Not Pretty’.
