Biography
Steve Hofmeyr was born on 29 August 1964 in Pretoria, South Africa. He went to Grey College in Bloemfontein, where he graduated in 1982. He did two years of compulsory military service before joining the Pretoria Technikon drama school.
Steve began his entertainment career in the 1980s as an actor after he attended Grey’s College where he studied drama. He was a cast member of the Afrikaans drama show called Agter elke man. He also starred in M-Net’s flagship soap opera Egoli: Place Of Gold. Steve played the role of Doug Durand on Egoli from 1992-2001. While in the show, his fame grew and by the time he was leaving, he had become a celebrity. He left the show to establish his career as a singer and a songwriter.
In 1997 his music career took off when he recorded a duet for his album True To You with Belgian superstar Dana Winner, called You Don’t Bring Me, Flowers. The song was recorded in Flemish and shot to number 2 on the Belgian Top 100. Hofmeyr won SAMA awards for Best Selling South African Artist in 2003 and 2004. In 2006 he hosted his own show on Afrikaans channel kykNET, called Dis Hoe Dit Is Met Steve (That’s How It Is With Steve).
Personal life
Steve Hofmeyr married actress Natasha Sutherland, whom he had met on the set of Egoli: Place of Gold in 1998. They had two sons. Hofmeyr also has two sons and two daughters by other women. The couple was divorced after reports of numerous affairs dominated Hofmeyr’s time in the spotlight in 2008.
In the same year, Steve allegedly assaulted Esmaré Weideman, editor of Huisgenoot, a popular Afrikaans magazine, by pouring a cup of cold tea over her at the Miss South Africa finals. He was said to have blamed her and two other journalists for his divorce from Sutherland.
In 2008, van der Vyver, a fitness instructor, revealed that she and Steve had been seeing each other for 10 years. The couple got married on 26 January 2014, and gave birth to their daughter, Romy Lee, on 19 June 2017.
Controversies
Steve has been caught in quite a lot of controversies, he was accused of racism in 2011, after threatening to include the ethnic slur “kaffir” in the lyrics of a song. He however removed the offensive word in his song, citing that the word would offend his black friends and colleagues.
In 2014, Hofmeyr was heavily criticized after performing the former South African national anthem, Die Stem, at a cultural festival. The anthem is generally disliked by black South Africans, who saw it as triumphalist and strongly associated it with the apartheid regime. He went on to perform the anthem on international tours and encouraged white South Africans to continue singing it, stating that it did not contain any form of hate speech.
In October 2014, Hofmeyr wrote and published a tweet stating that he believed that black South Africans were the “architects of apartheid” on his public Twitter account. This prompted a significant public backlash. He also criticized Disney’s plan to have more inclusive characters, suggesting this was a way of teaching children “bestiality” and that the “+” in LGBTQ+ could be inclusive of relationships with animals.
Hofmeyr’s series of controversies led to the removal of his contents MultiChoice networks, most notably DStv. In response, Hofmeyr called for a boycott of Multichoice, calling for fans to destroy their DStv boxes.
