Steven D’Shawn Francis was born on February 21, 1977, and grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland. People called him “Wink” when he was a kid. His mom, Brenda, passed away from cancer in 1995, and his grandma took care of him like a parent. He quit playing basketball after his mom’s death. His dad spent 20 years in federal prison for robbing a bank. Francis said his stepdad, who collected garbage, was his best friend. When he was young, Francis got food stamps and shared an apartment with 18 people.
At ten years old, Francis started working for drug dealers and sold crack cocaine on the street when he was a teenager during the American crack epidemic. He went to six different high schools and only played two high school basketball games. He left school at 18 when his mom died. But later, he got his GED when he got a chance to play college basketball for San Jacinto College. The coaches noticed him at an Amateur Athletic Union tournament.
In 1996-97, Francis went to San Jacinto College, and in 1997-98, he attended Allegany College of Maryland. He became the first player to lead two unbeaten teams to the National Junior College Tournament. In one game for Allegany, he got a quadruple-double playing against Shawn Marion and Vincennes University.
Career
Steve Francis played for the Houston Rockets from 1999 to 2004. When he was drafted in 1999, he didn’t want to play for the Vancouver Grizzlies, and he had some reasons like the distance from his home and taxes. Eventually, he got traded to the Rockets in a big deal.
