President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered State Governments to stop rewarding bandits with money, or any other form of compensation in process of negotiating with them.
The President stated that the art of rewarding bandits and criminal in the name of negotiation is a very dangerous act that will eventually lead to disaster.
The president instead, urged the state government to be proactive and take responsibility by increasing the measures of security in the schools as well as the community at large.
The president disclosed the information via his Twitter handle on Friday
He wrote: “State Governments must review their policy of rewarding bandits with money and vehicles. Such a policy has the potential to backfire with disastrous consequences.”
“States and Local Governments must also play their part by being proactive in improving security in & around schools,”
Meanwhile, the president also disclosed why security forces haven’t deployed force against bandits in the country.
Buhari noted that security agencies have not moved against bandits because of the fear of “heavy casualties of innocent villagers and hostages” that may be suffered in such operations.
The spokesperson to the President, Garba Shehu, on Friday quoted his principal saying, “We have the capacity to deploy massive force against the bandits in the villages where they operate, but our limitation is the fear of heavy casualties of innocent villagers and hostages who might be used as human shields by the bandits.”
