Interview with Sophie Rundle
Tell us about your character
I play Ada Shelby. She’s the sister of the boys from Peaky Blinder and as much as all the boys are that wild, vicious, ruthless kind of character, she’s a real kind of wild wild child but, because she’s a girl in this era, she somehow channels his energy quite differently. Everything you imagine about the 20s, the banging girls and bright young things, Ada embodies a lot of it. She is part of this new generation with all this energy that is looking for a change after the First World War. So she’s kind of wild, bright and full of energy.
The women of Peaky Blinders are all very strong
There are really only three female characters, all of them are really fiery and daring. It’s amazing as a woman to read this kind of part because there are no wilted flowers or damsels in distress. They’re all balloons and some are a little scarier than the guys, which is really fun to play. It’s a really ruthless world and it’s a ruthless time and they have to protect themselves and their families.
Tell us a bit about the kind of world it takes place in
It’s just before the 1920s in Birmingham at a time of real social upheaval. It was just after the First World War that I think everything changed for everyone. These men left and they came back changed and they had seen things and the women had been left behind. So when you start watching Peaky Blinders we’re really at that time where people wanted something new and I think they weren’t happy to go back to the life they had before hence the 20s were really coming. really sparked this energy of a lot of young people wanting to kind of break free from all the turn-of-the-century corsets and those long skirts. Suddenly the girls’ dresses were getting shorter and looser and for my character,
What was it like working with the cast and crew?
It was like this big family and it was really nice. This is a really exciting and talented group of young people. The creativity behind it all has been extraordinary. The directors, Otto and Tom, are just extremely talented guys, who absolutely loved the scripts and totally understood the world that Steve Knight had created. The art department was amazing, all the props and costumes and I think everyone was so excited about those scripts and really wanted to jump into that world and they did. It’s so nice to be part of it because everyone just wants it to be perfect and awesome. So it was a lot of fun. It was a very good atmosphere.
