Sofia Vergara
An actress with an impressive physique and plenty of talent, international fame has come to Sofía Vergara in later life, when she is about to turn 40, with the Modern Family series . But better late than never.
Sofía Margarita Vergara Vergara was born there where the alligator left, that is, in Barranquilla (Colombia), on July 10, 1972. The daughter of a cattle breeder, she studied at a Spanish-English bilingual school. She subsequently enrolled in Dentistry at the University of Colombia.
While sunbathing on a beach in the Caribbean Sea, a photographer and talent scout noticed her figure and offered her a contract for an advertisement for a well-known soft drink brand that is still remembered in her native country. Thus, she began a career as a model and was chosen to present the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, in Chile. She became very popular in Latin America when she became romantically linked to the popular Mexican singer Luis Miguel.
He settled in the United States when the Hispanic chain Univisión, from Miami, offered him an exclusive contract to present the programs “Fuera de serie” and “A que no te atres”. She debuted as an actress with the Televisa Acapulco Mexican soap opera, Cuerpo y Alma .
When the 21st century began, Sofía Vergara went to Los Angeles ready to succeed in the world of cinema. But in the auditions she was quickly discarded because her blonde hair did not fit with the image of a Latina woman they had there.”They believe that every Latina is like Salma Hayek ,” explained the actress. When she understood what the problem was, she was easily able to fix it by dyeing herself a brunette. “I went on to be a seductive Latina girl.”
Finally they recruited her for the first time to shoot something in English. It was to be a presenter at the American Comedy Awards, on the Fox network. While working at this event, she met director Barry Sonnenfeld , who offered her one of the roles in his ensemble comedy The Big Trouble , where she was a domestic worker. She went on to have more of a presence in Chasing Papi , where she was the waitress Cici, one of the three lovers of a womanizing executive, played by Eduardo Verástegui ( Bella ). Catherine Hardwicke directed her in Lords of Dogtown , and John Singleton in Four Brothers .
On television, she was one of the protagonists of Amas de casa desesperadas , the Argentine version of Desperate Women , which did not catch on. She had to be Alicia Oviedo, a transcript of Mary Alice Young, the suicide who becomes the narrator of the series. She also appeared in Let’s Rob… Mick Jagger , Dirty Sexy Money , Fire in the Blood and The Entourage .
But the role that has given her the most international relevance has been that of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, the cannon woman married to a mature man ( Ed O’Neill ), in the satire Modern Family . For her work, she earned two consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Comedy, and one for a Golden Globe. In addition, her fame has landed her such roles as executive Odile on The Smurfs . In New Year’s Eve she is the friend and helper of a chef played by Katherine Heigl .
Married in 1991 to Joe Gonzalez, the marriage only lasted a couple of years before the divorce. Before they had a son, Manolo, born in 1992.
