  1. As a child, he lost his right eye in an accident, resulting in broken glass and eye injuries.
  2. In 1976 he moved to the USA with his family. They settled in the Baychester area of ​​the Bronx.
  3. While studying in high school, he met a rapper, Dana Dane. They became close friends and soon formed their own rap crew. The Kangol crew , and often used to perform at local clubs, parks, and school competitions.
  4. In 1984, Rick met rapper and record producer Doug E. Fresh at a talent show. Doug was very impressed with Rick’s talent and recruited him as a new member of The Get Fresh Crew .
  5. He rose to fame early in his career providing vocals on songs such as Die Show and La Di Da Di , which were produced by Doug. Both songs are very popular in the popular charts.
  6. Early in his career, he performed under the stage name MC Ricky D. He later adopted Rick The Ruler as his stage name before settling on Slick Rick.
  7. In 1986, Slick Rick was signed to Russell Simmons’ Rush Artist Management. He also became the 3rd musical artist to be signed by Def Jam Records.
  8. In 1989, on the advice of his mother, he decided to sign his first cousin Mark Plummer as a bodyguard. Plummer was soon held accountable, however, and he even attempted to extort money from Rick.
  9. He eventually decided to fire Plummer, but Plummer was not happy with the severance package. He has even attempted multiple times to rob Rick and murder him and his mother.
  10. After seeing Plummer in the neighborhood, Rick fired at least 4 shots at him, one hitting Plummer and one hitting a passerby in the foot. However, they suffered no life-threatening injuries.
  11. Although he described his action as mere self-defense, he pled guilty to attempted murder and other charges, including criminal possession of a weapon, use of a firearm, and assault.
  12. He had to serve 5 years in prison, of which 2years were on second-degree attempted murder charges. The other 3 years were for his violation of immigration and naturalization services. His prison sentence ended in 1997.
  13. In June 2001, he was arrested by the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) for returning to the United States via Florida. He had performed on a Caribbean cruise ship that had entered the United States.
  14. He was repeatedly denied bail and served 17 months in prison before being released in November 2003.
  15. In October 2006, the Department of Homeland Security launched another attempt to deport Rick from the United States. They even tried to move his case to a more conservative court.
  16. His troubles with the law were finally put to rest by New York Gov. David Paterson in May 2008, when he granted him an unconditional and full pardon on the attempted murder charges. Paterson was pleased with Rick’s behavior over the years after the incident.
  17. He was granted US citizenship in April 2016. He also decided to keep his British citizenship.
