He was a close associate of Leonard Bernstein. For orchestrating his score for “West Side Story” for the screen, he won an Oscar in 1963. Sid Ramin passed away on July 1, 2019 at the respectable age of one hundred.

Born on January 22, 1919, in Boston (Massachusetts), Sidney Norton Ramin was the son of a humble window dresser. He began his professional career as a composer of the music for the sitcom Candid Camera , where he conducted the orchestra during live broadcasts. “We couldn’t do a second take, so everything had to work out,” he recalled.

He made his Broadway debut conducting the orchestra of “Wonderful Town”, a musical composed by Leonard Bernstein , who managed to meet him again, since both had been childhood friends. “Lenny had instilled in me a love of music,” he explained in an interview. Bernstein insisted that he had to be the orchestrator of West Side Story , a job that earned him an Academy Award after its film adaptation. The success of this title led Sid Ramin to become one of the most in-demand orchestrators on the New York scene, working on titles such as Jule Styne-Sondheim’s “Gypsy” in 1959 and Cy Coleman’s “Wildcat” in 1960.The price of pleasure .

He is survived by Gloria, his wife of 70 years. Their son, Ron Ramin , has followed in his footsteps as a composer, among other works, of the theme song for the television series Walker, Texas Ranger .
