Shooter Jennings (born Waylon Albright Jennings in 1979) is an American country music singer, the only child of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. His middle name comes from his father’s drummer, Richie Albright. His father nicknamed him “Shooter” after he urinated on a nurse shortly after birth (as Jennings wrote in his 1996 autobiography).

Shooter Jennings lived his early years in a crib on his parents’ tour bus. At age five, he was playing the drums. Between tours, he takes piano lessons. He started playing guitar at fourteen and occasionally played in his father’s band. He and his dad recorded a few things together when they set up microphones and hooked up the tape recorder. At sixteen, Jennings discovered rock’n’roll.

As an adult, Jennings left Nashville, Tennessee to seek his fortune in Los Angeles. He reunited and played with Stargunn, a Southern rock band whose sound he described as mutant Lynyrd Skynyrd in Guns N’ Roses.

Stargunn performed in local clubs for six years, garnering rave reviews and acclaim from the local music press. But the Hollywood party scene eventually started to bother him. He says, “I was posing as a rocker – a country guy trying to be something he wasn’t.”

On March 30, 2003, Jennings disbanded Stargunn and moved to New York to spend time with his girlfriend and sort out what he wanted to do next. An unexpected concert at the House of Blues a few weeks later revived his creativity.

He returned to Los Angeles to form another band, the 357. After six weeks in the studio, he completed his first solo album, Put the O Back in Country. Universal South released the album in early 2005.

Jennings portrayed his father in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. He is the host of Shooter Jennings’ Electric Rodeo, a weekly two-hour music show on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Outlaw Country channel. He is currently dating Drea de Matteo. Shooter Jennings’ second solo album, “Electric Rodeo”, was released on April 4, 2006.

CAREER

Jennings was born in Nashville, Tennessee on May 19, 1979. He spent his early years in a crib on his parents’ tour bus surrounded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. At age five, he was playing the drums. At age 8, he began taking piano lessons. He started playing guitar at fourteen and occasionally played percussion in his father’s band.

In high school, Jennings fronted an industrial rock band called KilRaven for his high school talent show. In 2011 he released the KilRaven track ‘Only You’ on the album ‘Missed The Boat’.

In 1996, Jennings and her father recorded an album together. They called it Fenixon (a play on the words “phoenix” and “sun”) but couldn’t find a label to distribute it. Some of the material was remastered and used for the Waylon Forever album. Fenixon’s complete recording was eventually released by Jennings’ Black Country Rock label in 2014.

Family man
In 2011, with childhood friend and master pianist Erik Deutsch, Jennings formed The Triple Crown, a new backing band with Erik Deutsch on piano, Tony Leone on drums, Jeff Hill on bass, Jon Graboff on pedals, Eleanor Whitmore on violin and Chris Masterson on lead guitar.

On March 13, 2012, after signing a recording contract with E1 Music, and with The Triple Crown for the ride, Jennings returned to his country roots with the release of the album Family Man, his first self-produced release. The album was originally supposed to contain eighteen tracks, but was split into two albums: Family Man and The Other Life in 2013.

On July 31, 2012, Jennings was featured on Bucky Covington’s debut single ‘The Drinking Side of Country’ from the album Good Guys.

Jennings attended the Feb. 25 Johnny Cash 80th Birthday Bash, where he performed Cocaine Blues With Willie Nelson and Amy Nelson. The performance was released in a DVD/CD combo.

In October 2012, Jennings was one of six commentators on the miniseries Ovation Song By Song: Johnny Cash.

The Other Life
While recording Family Man, Jennings decided to cut out the darker tracks from the album and use them instead for the album’s follow-up, The Other Life.

“Five of these songs were recorded when we were making Family Man, and when we decided what to do with them, we split it into two discs.

The Other Life is representative of the other side of the coin to Family Man and how my life has unfolded in so many ways. At first we were going to call it The Outsider, but once we got in in the movie, we thought, “Well, that’s like a mirror, a dark mirror of what Family Man was.” – Jennings told TheBoot.com.

Jennings premiered the track “Wild & Lonesome” (featuring Patti Griffin) on the 4th season of the FX original series Sons of Anarchy. Followed by the release of an official first single from the album ‘The White Trash Song’ (featuring Scott H. Biram) which premiered on RollingStones.com with the announcement that the album would be accompanied by a film.

The album included seven new songs, as well as two covers (“Flying Saucer song” by Harry Nilsson and “The White Trash song” by Steve Young) and “Outlaw You”, which was released in early 2012 digitally.

Jennings along with filmmaker Blake Judd released the film The Other Life. At 32 minutes long, it uses six of the album’s songs as a sort of narration. The film tells the story of a musician leaving his family to go on a tour, but when he does, he finds the road isn’t the same and becomes haunted by a mysterious woman.

Throughout the film, the musician is forced to confront his darkest urges and deal with self-discovery, temptation, isolation and rebirth. The film ends with a short adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.

The Other Life won Best Short Film at the 2013 Horror Hound Festival.

Black Country Rock Media
In October 2013, Jennings announced the creation of his new multi-format label and record label, Black Country Rock.

Their early releases included: a remastered release of Waylon Jennings’ Right for the Time album, two live albums (one by Jessi Colter titled Live from Cain’s Ballroom and one by Jennings titled The Other Life), as well as a recording of ” You Are My Sunshine” with vocals from Jamey Johnson and Jennings. All four have been released on vinyl, cassette, CD, as well as digitally.

The Magic
On February 27, 2014, Jennings revealed that he would be releasing a lyric follow-up to Hierophant’s 2010 album, Black Ribbons, titled The Magic, based on the first story of the controversial and interactive horror series Thirteen.

Along with The Magic Jennings also announced that after nearly a decade of waiting he would be releasing the 1995 collaborative album, Fenixon.

Both projects launched on Record Store Day in 2014 and then sold out.

‘George/Giorgio’ Releases
Towards the end of May 2014, Jennings announced plans to release two EPs later in the year. Don’t Wait Up (for George) is a tribute to his close friend and mentor George Jones, published in August 2014.

Jennings’ seventh studio album, Countach (For Giorgio), was originally scheduled for release in November 2014, but its release was delayed due to the sudden death of Jon Hensley, Jennings’ longtime manager and friend and co-founder of Black. Country Rock.

As a tribute to 1970s electronic music pioneer and producer Giorgio Moroder, the album was released on February 26, 2016 and features guest vocals from Steve Young, Brandi Carlile, Marilyn Manson and Richard Garriott de Cayeux.

In May 2012, Jennings announced via Twitter that he and musician Lukas Nelson (son of Willie Nelson) were in the studio recording an album together. That same year, Jennings announced plans to produce a film based on her father’s life and career.

Jennings posted a status on his official Facebook page in February 2014 stating that he would soon collaborate with Billy Ray Cyrus on a future version of BCR. Also in 2014, Jennings played his first gigs with Waylor’s Outlaws, his father’s band.
