Biography

Al-Sabah was born on June 16, 1929. He finished his schooling with tutors after receiving his elementary education at Al Mubarakya School in the 1930s. He was the half-brother of Sabah, who was replaced as prime minister in July 2003 by Sheikh Saad Al-Salim Al-Sabah by the previous emir of Kuwait, Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. His brother perished in the 1994 pilot-initiated disaster of Royal Air Maroc Flight 630. Before becoming the Emir of Kuwait, Sabah served as the foreign minister from 1963 to 2003, making him the second-longest-serving foreign minister overall at the time of his resignation.

After the Gulf War, Sabah repaired Kuwait’s international connections while serving as foreign minister. While serving as foreign minister, he also held the position of first deputy prime minister. From 1965 until 1967, he served as finance minister in acting capacity. Due to Jaber III’s poor health, he served as prime minister and de facto ruler from 2003 until 2006.

Career

Sabah was appointed Kuwait’s foreign minister in 1963. By the time he left office in 2003, he had held the job for the longest period of any foreign minister in history. Sabah also held the position of acting finance minister from 1965 to 1967 and first deputy prime minister of his nation. After resigning as foreign minister in the summer of 2003, Sabah was named prime minister of Kuwait by his half-brother Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who was serving as the emir at the time. He took up the position from Sheikh Saad Al-Salim Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of Kuwait.

When Emir Jaber passed away in early 2006, Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Saad became the country’s next emir. Saad, though, was suffering from a kind of dementia and was unable to communicate for very long. After a tussle for control among the ruling family, Saad decided to resign because of his sickness. Sabah was subsequently elected by the National Assembly to be the next emir of Kuwait and was sworn in on January 29, 2006. Two years later, following the resignation of the cabinet and a power struggle within the administration, he dissolved the National Assembly. Sabah disbanded the legislature in 2012. In addition to his other duties as Emir, he acted as a regional and global mediator, using Kuwait as a middleman between many rival nations and parties. Sabah designated Kuwait as the primary arbiter in the diplomatic issue with Qatar in 2017.

Humanitarianism

Sabah was heavily interested in charitable work while serving as emir. He contributed significantly to initiatives for disaster relief, public health, and international peace in addition to his support for Syrian refugees. Sabah received a humanitarian award from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2014. In the meanwhile, Jimmy Carter, a former US president, described him as a “global humanitarian leader.”

Sabah was famous for imprisoning his opponents throughout his rule, including protesters, journalists, and even lawmakers. For tweeting, “We call on the Kuwaiti government to abide by international agreements it has signed respecting human rights,” Ayad Al-Hirbi was given a two-year jail term at the beginning of 2013. Kuwait must endeavor to increase liberties rather than restrict them as a country. A Kuwaiti court and Sabah condemned three former MPs to hard labor in jail shortly after that for allegedly insulting Sabah. More than 300 people were being held in custody in Kuwait at the time on suspicion of insulting the Emir. Musallam Al-Barrak, a former lawmaker and leader of the opposition, was arrested in 2015, and 16 more individuals were imprisoned in 2016 for sharing an Al-Barrak speech.
