Biography of Shane Macgowan

Kent-born music artist, Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan, is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Celtic punk band The Pogues. “What a Wonderful World”, “The Church of the Holy Dread”, “This Woman Makes Me Drink”, and “My Way”.

During his childhood, Macgowan lived in the Home Counties where he attended an English public school. He then went to Holmewood House School in Langton Green. He won a literature scholarship in 1971 which saw him accepted into Westminster School.

However, he was expelled in his second year after being caught in possession of drugs. He started his musical journey when he formed the punk rock band, The Nipple Erectors, ‘The Nips’.

MacGowan formed The Pogues around 1982. Afterwards, he changed his initial punk style to a more traditional sound. Most of his songs are influenced by Irish nationalism.

Around 1985 and 1987, he co-wrote “Fairytale of New York”, which he performed with Kirsty MacColl. In the following years, MacGowan and The Pogues released several albums. When the Pogues expelled MacGowan for unprofessional behavior, he founded a new band, The Popes Together, they released two studio albums.

In May 2005, MacGowan joined the Pogues permanently. That same year, The Pogues re-released “Fairytale of New York” to raise funds for the Justice For Kirsty movement and Crisis at Christmas.

Based on the success of the 2018 final, MacGowan was scheduled to perform on July 7 alongside a host of celebrities at the 2019 Feis Liverpool Final, but the show was eventually postponed due to a lack of ticket sales and funding problems. to perform on June 13, 2019 at the RDS Arena in Dublin as guest of Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders.
