2. Shaggy’s older brother, John Utsler, known by his stage name John Kickjazz, was found dead in a Michigan dorm on November 20, 2015.
3. Utsler was a lawbreaker in his youth.
4. Shaggy suffered from depression and anxiety throughout his youth.
5. He was a drunk and drug addict, spending most of his time in several drug rehabilitation centers.
6. In September 2009, Dope began cutting off drug pills and improving his drinking habits. By 2011, he became completely sober.
7. On September 1, 2009 on the American talk radio show The Howard Stern Show he revealed that he had stopped using alcohol and drugs because he was going to have cirrhosis of the liver.

He began his music career in 1989 as Kangol Joe teaming with Joseph Bruce as Jagged Joe and John Utsler as Master J naming the trio the JJ Boys and releasing the first single titled Party on the Top of the Hill . They changed their band name to Downtown Posse and performed in the nightclubs under the stage names Violent J, 2 Dope and John Kickjazz.
