Biography

Seyi Shay with the full name Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua as earlier stated is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born and raised in Tottenham, London. Her mother is from the Northern part of Nigeria and her father, a native of Ife.

Seyi Shay started visiting Nigeria when she was just two years old. She attended the Command High School in Maryland, Lagos. At the age of 6, Seyi Shay joined her school choir. She performed for the London Community Gospel Choir during their world tour and which included 13 cities in Japan.

Later on, she returned to London to complete her undergraduate studies. She graduated from the University of East London with a BA Hons in Music Business Management.

Initially, her interest in music was fueled by her mother who was a chorister, her sister who used to compose songs for the BBC, and her brother who was a prominent club and radio DJ in London.

In an interview, Seyi Shay revealed that before her mother’s demise, she was not in support of her pursuing a music career. But rather, wanted her to become a Lawyer or a Doctor. On her death bed, she called on Seyi Shay and told her to focus on her music career and put God first. Those were indeed her departing blessings and it was suiting for Seyi Shay and her musical career.

Career

Her career started booming when she signed her first record deal with No Apologies, a record company affiliated with Sir George Martin. In 2006, Seyi Shay went ahead to form a girl band in the UK, Boadicea. The band was managed by Ron Tom. Unfortunately, the band separated after two years and Seyi Shay joined the From Above UK singing audition. After the auditions, she emerged as the lead vocalist for the now defunct girl group, From Above. The group inked a record deal with Matthew Knowles’ management company after performing with him.

Later on, they were taken to Houston to undergo vocal and dance training. The group supported Beyoncé while she was in the UK for her I Am… World Tour. Eventually, the group pulled apart and Seyi Shay joined Fly Time Music after getting an offer from them. During this period, she worked with quite a number of musicians such as Justin Timberlake, Michelle Williams, H-Money, Darey, Bilal, Chip, and so on.

Seyi Shay also stated that she doesn’t restrict herself to just a genre of music but gets her music from whatever inspires her. She cited her mother, Matthew Knowles, Beyoncé, Tina Turner, 2Face, Sound Sultan, Wizkid, and Omawumi as her music mentors.

Ever since she came to the limelight, Seyi Shay has continually performed in several highly reputable events. And she has likewise performed, featured, and even collaborated with several music stars. To mention but a few, she has been on records and shows with the likes of Olamide, Timaya, Kelly Rowland, D’Banj, Tiwa Savage, Waje, Timi Dakolo, Cobhams Asuquo, and so on.

On June 7 2022, Piriye Isokraki unveiled Seyi Shay as one of the female artists signed to Aristokrat Records, the management division of Aristokrat 360.
