Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde (born December 25, 1967) is a Nigerian businessman, politician, and philanthropist who has been Governor of Oyo State since May 29, 2019. He is an engineer who specialises in fluid and gas metering. He is the group managing director of Makon Group Limited, an indigenous Nigerian oil and gas business. After years of work experience with worldwide oil and gas firms, he founded his first oil and gas private company, Makon Engineering and Technical Services (METS), at the age of 29 in 1997. Early Life and Education
Seyi Makinde was born on the 25th of December to Pa Olatubosun Makinde, a teacher turned accountant, and Abigail Makinde of Aigbofa Compound in Oja’ba, Ibadan, Oyo State. He is the family’s third child. Makinde began his studies at St Paul Primary School and finished at St Michael Primary School in Yemetu, Ibadan. Afterwards, he completed his secondary education at Bishop Phillips Academy in Monatan, Ibadan. He was then admitted to the University of Lagos (Unilag) in 1985, where he got a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
Makinde received training in the Safety Shutdown System at Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas in 1998, and Development of Analytical Competence for Managing Operations at Lagos Business School (now Pan-Atlantic University) in 1999. He received automation training in 2000. In 2002, he attended Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, England, to study Fundamentals of Crude Sampling. He also studied Understanding and Solving Complex Business Problems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States in 2005.

Business Career
Makinde served his national service (NYSC) with the Nigerian Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), where he later worked as a trainee engineer. Between 1990 and 1992, he served in various roles, managing and participating in several significant projects. From 1992 to 1997, he worked at Rebold International Limited as a field Engineer (Eket operations), and in 1995, he was promoted to Field Manager.
After working as the Engineering Manager for numerous international oil and gas corporations (IOCs) for five years (1992-1997), Makinde founded his own company, Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited (METS), in 1997. He is now the Makon Group of Companies’ group managing director. Makinde is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Oil and Gas Design Engineers of Nigeria (OGDEN), the International Society of Automation (ISA), the Institute of Measurement and Control UK, and the American Measurement Institute (AMI).
Political Career
Seyi Makinde ran for the Oyo South Senatorial seat on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007 but lost to Kamoru Adedibu of the Peoples Democratic Party. Makinde was undaunted by his initial failed attempt, and in 2010, he ran for the Oyo South Senatorial seat under the People’s Democratic Party but lost the primary to the incumbent Oyo South Senator.
Seyi Makinde opted for the 2015 Oyo state gubernatorial ticket under the People’s Democratic Party platform in 2014. But, he was denied the governorship nomination ticket in December 2014, following the end of the party’s primary election. Makinde, on the other hand, remained true to his desire and switched to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Under the platform, he contested for the Oyo State 2015 SDP gubernatorial candidate but finished in third with almost 50,000 votes.

Oyo State Governor
Following extensive, deep, and wide deliberations with National Leaders, Oyo State leaders and elders of the Social Democratic Party, and cross sections of strategic partners within Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde returned to his former political party, People’s Democratic Party, in September 2017. He asserted that he joined the PDP not for personal gain, but for the development of the state by finding long-term answers to the state’s numerous difficulties. Makinde was then elected as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate for Oyo State in the 2019 general elections. This was after receiving 2772 votes in the primary election held at Liberty Stadium in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, on September 29, 2018.
On March 9, 2019, Makinde received 515,621 votes, surpassing his closest opponent, Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressive Party, who received 357,982 votes. Makinde was elected Governor of Oyo State in the 2019 Oyo State Gubernatorial Elections, which took place on March 9, 2019.
Later on, Makinde was sworn in as the 28th executive Governor of Oyo State on May 29, 2019.
