Sergio made his club debut for the first time on 5 July 2003, aged 15, against Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro Independiente , when he was brought on by coach Oscar Ruggeri for Emmanuel Rivas as a 69th ^minute substitute .

He made his La Liga debut for Atletico Madrid on 17 September 2006 in a 4–1 away win over Athletic Bilbao. On his debut he was on the score sheet.
