Seamus McGarvey was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland on the 29th of June, 1967. He attended film school at the University of Westminster, London. But before then, he worked as a still photographer.
In 1998, following his graduation, he began shooting short films and documentaries. This includes Skin which was nominated for a Royal Television Society Cinematography Award and Atlantic which was directed by Sam Taylor-Wood. The Atlantic project which was filmed in 1997 earned the director a nomination for the 1998 Turner Prize, thereby resulting in a collaboration between Seamus McGarvey and Sam Taylor-Wood, the director. Seamus McGarvey resides in Tuscany, Italy.

Career
He has four dozen credits as a director of photography for projects such as The Avengers, We Need To Talk About Kevin, World Trade Center, Charlotte’s Web, Along Came Polly, High Fidelity, Wit, Enigma, Butterfly Kiss, and so on. However, the first two projects that marked his directorial debut included; The War Zone and The Winter Guest.
In 2009, Seamus McGarvey reunited with director Wright and Sam Taylor-Wood on The Soloist project, Nowhere Boy and Death Valley. After working on Godzilla, he again teamed up with Sam Taylor-Johnson (formerly Sam Taylor-Wood) on her big screen adaptation and Hollywood directorial debut of the bestselling novel, Fifty Shades of Grey. Some of the other works he has photographed include Pan, The Accountant, Nocturnal Animals, The Greatest Showman, Life, Greta, Bad Times at the El Royale, and The Nevers.
