SARA MARTINS DEATH IN PARADISE

In April 2011, BBC One announced that Sara Martins would star in crime comedy-drama Death in Paradise. The series was Martins’ first in both comedy and British television. At the time, she had experience playing a cop. The series premiered on October 25, 2011. Martins played Camille Bordey, a detective sergeant on the fictional Caribbean island of St. Mary’s.

Sara Martins and other local agents help British Detective Inspector Richard Poole solve numerous murder cases in the town. She revealed that it was during the production of Death in Paradise that she discovered that some of her mannerisms are distinctly French. The 3rd series killed Inspector Poole in the first episode. He was replaced by another British Detective Inspector, Humphrey Goodman.

The fourth episode of the 4th series “Till Death Do You Part” was Martins’ last; his character was written as moving to Paris. Of her departure from the show, Sara Martins reportedly said, “I loved everything about the show. But the only way to grow in life is to take risks, even if it means losing something you love or leaving a comfortable place’

INTERVIEW WITH SARA MARTINS

Q: How did you become involved with Death In Paradise?

Sara Martins: I had already worked with France Télévisions and when they received the script, they thought of me. I went in and did some auditions. They were looking for someone who would work well with Ben Miller and we met and hit it off right from the start.

Q: You have played female police officers in the past. What attracted you to the role of Camille?

Sara Martins: What I liked about Death In Paradise is that it’s not a procedural detective show. The team works on a fictional island – St. Mary’s – which has no forensic or ballistics facilities, the team must rely on their expertise. The show centers on the team’s relationships – and the teases between French and English cultures. In that respect, it’s a very classic show – it could almost be set in the 1950s. Camille is a great character; she is very strong and likes a challenge and I felt her connected with her.

Q: Did the teases about French and English culture also spill over onto the screen?

Sarah Martins: Yes. It’s funny, I didn’t know how French some of my mannerisms were before working on this series.

Q: How do Camille and Richard get along?

Sara Martins: Their relationship is like cat and dog. It’s one of those relationships where they’re both very smart and enjoy a challenge, but the way they do things is very different. It really is an attraction/repulsion relationship!

Q: How did you work with Ben Miller?

Sara Martins: Ben was fantastic to work with; we got on really well from the start. He is an incredibly hard worker. Sometimes the scenes work naturally and are very easy and sometimes you have to work harder on them. Ben would never give up on a scene, no matter how long he worked that day. I learned so much from him.

Q: You have a lot of stunts on the show. What was it like performing them?

Sara Martins: Well, I had a lot of stunts until I broke my Achilles tendon! I was doing a scene where Fidel (played by Gary Carr) was going to run and jump on a boat. I was telling the director that I really wanted to do it too. Gary and I started running and I managed to slip and break my Achilles tendon! I had to go to London for surgery and rest for two weeks before I could return to Guadeloupe. I hope viewers will never guess because it is so well hidden on screen.

Q: How was filming in Guadeloupe?

Sara Martins: It was an amazing island – very hot. One of my favorite things to do was get up early in the morning, sit on the beach and watch the sun come up – it was beautiful.
