Santiago made his debut for Villarreal on 30 November 2003 in a La Liga game against Deportivo de La Coruna.

On August 27, 2006 he played his first official game for Recreativo de Huelva against RCD Mallorca.

2. He was named Spanish Footballer of the Year for the 2006/07 season.
