Early life, biography and education of Sanjay Gupta
Sanjay Gupta was born on October 23, 1969 in Novi, Michigan. Sanjay’s parents, Subhash Priyanka and Damayanti Gupta, along with his older brother, Yogesh Gupta, emigrated from North India in the mid-1960s, landing in Michigan to work as engineers for Ford Motor Company. He belongs to the American nationality and as far as his ethnicity is concerned, he is of mixed ethnicity.
Sanjay went on and joined Novi High School and later attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He received a BS in biomedical science and received his MD from the University of Michigan Medical School in late 1993.
While in college, Sanjay served as president of the Indian American Student Association (IASA). Sanjay completed his neurological surgery residency in 2000 at the University of Michigan Health System. He later became a member of the Semmes Murphy Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee.
Since then, Sanjay has joined Grady Memorial Hospital as a General Neurosurgeon, working on 3D Image Guidance, Trauma and Spine operations. Gupta is licensed to practice medicine in New York, Michigan, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Sanjay Gupta started traveling places to understand medical aspects and his first stop was the Iraq raid in 2003. While in Iraq, he went on to serve the soldiers. He performed several emergency surgeries on both Iraqi civilians and American soldiers that made him famous.
He was embedded with a Navy medical unit at the time. In 2006 he covered medical reports after the great Hurricane Katrina. Reports of him from Charity Hospital, New Orleans awarded him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast.
Sanjay became chief medical correspondent at CNN’s Sanjay Gupta MD. In December 2006, the president of CBS News brokered a deal with CNN that provided that Gupta would present up to 10 reports on the two CBS shows; CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and 60 Minutes while continuing to be CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent and Associate Chief of Neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Sanjay was offered a United States Surgeon General position in the Obama administration in January 2009, but in March 2009 it was declared that Gupta had withdrawn his name due to his family and career, he reported.
Gupta followed up with fellow correspondent Cooper for CNN’s coverage of the earthquake in Haiti. Gupta was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on April 28 , 2012 for his achievement in the medical field.
