- At the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral in Atlanta, he was chosen to be one of the ushers. That same year, he was one of the students who held King’s father hostage in protest at Morehouse College.
- After the Morehouse protest, he was forced to leave Atlanta for two years and move to Los Angeles after the FBI warned his mother that Samuel could end up dead or in prison if he stayed in Atlanta.
- The Guinness World Records named him in 2009 as the highest grossing actor in the history of the industry with his films (68 films to date) having earned more than $7.4 billion in box office.
