Sam Simon, co-creator of “The Simpsons” passed away on March 8, 2015 at his home in Los Angeles, just one year after he was diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer. He was 59 years old.

Born in the same Californian city on June 6, 1955, Samuel Michael Simon began as a screenwriter on the animated series The New Adventures of Super Mouse . He later went on to write the live-action sitcoms Taxi and Cheers . In cinema he debuted writing the comedy starring Joe Pesci The Super .

In 1989 he developed The Simpsons with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks , where he served as showrunner, character designer, creative supervisor, and writer. He won seven Emmy Awards for the Yellow Family series, in addition to two for The Tracey Ullman Show , the series where Homer and his family first appeared.

He always felt more comfortable in the field of animation. “You can draw animals and scenery but animated characters have freedom too. The Simpsons sometimes do things that real people couldn’t,” he had said. Although he left this production in 1993, he was still listed as an executive producer as one of the creators, and earned in royalties about $10 million per year.

Divorced in 1991 from actress Jennifer Tilly , he joined erotica model Jami Ferrell. When he learned that his illness was terminal, Sam Simon dedicated the end of his life to charity, and has bequeathed his $100 million estate to various institutions. A great defender of animals, he bought zoos and circuses to free various species.
