Daniel Joseph Staub or Rusty Staub is the famous American baseball right fielder, first baseman and a designated hitter. The New York Mets Hall of Famer has been playing Major League Baseball for twenty-three years. During his time in MLB, he played for 5 different teams including Houston Astros, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos and Detroit Tigers.

Not many people have heard the name Daniel Staub, but baseball fans around the world know his other name, Rusty Staub. Without further ado, let’s now learn a little more about this baseball legend.

RUSTY STAUB: EARLY CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION AND CAREER

Daniel Joseph Staub was born on April 1, 1944 in New Orleans, Florida. He was born to father Ray Staub who was a school teacher, while his mother Alma Morton Staub was a homemaker. For his education, Staub went to Jesuit high school.

Rusty began his professional baseball career at age 17. He first signed a contract with the Houston Colt.45s organization. The next year he played for the Class B Carolina League. However, his big break came later in 1963 when he signed a $100,000 Major League deal.

Daniel played 5 seasons for Houston and was excellent during his time at the club. However, he was later traded to the Montreal Expos and spent three seasons with the team. While spending time at the Expos, he made 480 appearances and had 508 hits.

He was then bought by the New York Mets and the move was sensational. Then, just before the 1976 season, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers and spent 3 seasons with the team, where he recorded 358 runs and 70 home runs. In 198- the Texas Rangers bought the great Staub. While playing for the Rangers, he played 109 games with 102 hits. The same year, on December 16, he signed a contract with the New York Mets and played 418 games with the team. He had 169 hits with 13 homers.

RUSTY STAUB: RETIREMENT AND PERSONAL LIFE

Staub made his final appearance for MLB on October 6, 1985. He was 41 when he retired from playing and was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame for his service. He also received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Niagara University.

Looking now at the personal aspects of Rusty’s life, he was once in a relationship with a lady Candice Laflamme. According to reports, the two met in 1969 and were together until 1972.

Sadly, Rusty passed away on March 29, 2018. He passed away peacefully just before his 74th birthday at Good Samaritan Medical Center.
