When you talk about drag queens, then who will come to mind? While there are many popular drag queens out there, RuPaul Charles, the queen behind the reality show that introduced audiences to the drag art form, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” would pop into many of our minds. If you are unfamiliar with the drag queen, he is an American actor, writer, producer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, and model.

RUPAUL: BIO, FAMILY, EARLY CAREER

The talk show host was born RuPaul Andre Charles on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. His name RuPaul was named by his mother, which means Ru ‘roux’, a word for okra or Creole stews and soups. He grew up with his mother and three sisters after his parents divorced in 1967.

At age fifteen, he moved with his sister Renetta to pursue performing arts in Atlanta, Georgia. However, he did not reveal any information about his high school or college. Moreover, in the beginning of his career, he struggled as a musician and filmmaker in 1980. At that time, he worked at the famous Plazza Theater in Atlanta and made his debut in 1982 through the access variety show audience of Atlanta ‘The American Music Show’ for years. He had also performed as a backup singer for Glen Meadmore and drag queen Vaginal Davis.

In the 1990s he was already famous in the UK and known for his appearances in the Channel 4 series ‘Manhattan Cable’. He also performed solo in genre bender performances in conjunction with other bands at several New York nightclubs. And he’s worked at the annual Wigstock Drag Festival over the years and appeared in the documentary Wigstock: The Movie.

RUPAUL: CAREER AND LIFE ACHIEVEMENTS

In 1993 he started his career as a musician who recorded the dance/house album ‘Supermodel of the World’ that same year. The album was released by rap label Tommy Boy peaking at 45 on the Billboard Hot 100. His next two singles/videos, ‘Back to My Roots’ and ‘A Shade Shady (Now Prance)’ were released and are all both mounted in the front row. on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. After that, he signed a modeling contract for MAC Cosmetics.

The following year, he landed hosting a talk show “The RuPaul Show” on VH1 interviewing celebrity guests and entertainers. He co-hosted the show with Michelle Visage, with whom he also co-hosted WKTU radio. Subsequently, he released his second album, ‘Foxy Lady’ but with the Rhino Records label based in Los Angeles. In 1997, he released his third album, a Christmas album called “Ho Ho Ho”.

RuPaul began producing a reality television show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in mid-2008 which aired on Logo in February 2009. In April 2011, following the show’s Season 3 finale, he released his sixth studio album “Glamazon”, produced by Revolucian. The album reached 11 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic album chart and 8 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. In the same year, he released another remix EP “SuperGlam DQ” featuring the remixes of Glamazon tracks with a new song, “Sexy Drag Queen”.

His other discographies include Born Naked (2014), Realness (2015), Slay Belles (2015), Butch Queen (2016), American (2017), Christmas Party (2018) and You’s a Winner, Baby (2020).

RuPaul also dabbled in other fields like acting, entrepreneurship and became a voice actor for the audiobook ‘One Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo’. He debuted on his podcast ‘RuPaul: What’s The Tee? With Michelle Visage” on April 6, 2014. He hosted the podcast with fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage.

Moreover, he has also appeared in several movies and TV series. Additionally, he is also credited as a producer and writer. His films include 1995’s ‘A Mother’s Player’, 1996’s ‘A Very Brady Sequel’, 2000’s ‘The Truth About Jane’, 2006’s ‘Zombie Prom: The Movie’, and 2019’s ‘Trixie Mattel: Moving Parts’, among others. In 2019 he appeared in Taylor Swift’s ‘You Need To Calm Down’ music video. He guest appeared on many TV series like 1998’s ‘Hercules’, 2010’s ‘Ugly Betty’, 2016’s ‘The Muppets’, 2017’s ‘2 Broke Girls’ and 2017’s ‘BoJack Horseman’.

RUPAUL: PERSONAL LIFE AND PARTNER

The most popular drag queen in the world came out openly as gay a long time ago. However, he has kept his lips tight about his private life and does not talk much about his personal life. But he is known for his marriage to longtime boyfriend Georges LeBar, which he revealed in an interview with ‘Hollywood Today Live’. LeBar is a renowned painter and breeder from Australia.

During a conversation with Oprah, he recalled that his partner was faithful to him. He further added that they first met at the now closed New York club Limelight in 1994 on Georges birthday. Since then they have been together and no conflict has affected their relationship.
