- At the age of 12 he wrote his first song, Don’t Tell Me . It was released in 2017 and held the #86 spot on the ARIA chart.
- When Ruel was 12, his father worked with Melbourne DJ Nate Flagrant on a campaign. During the project, Ruel’s father Nate performed a demo of his son’s version of James Bay’s popular hit, Forget It .
- Impressed by Ruel’s vocal abilities, Nate passed the track on to producer Mark Landon, who has worked with the likes of Eminem, Daniel Johns, Madonna and Kimbra. He also liked the boy’s voice.
- Dijk then focused on vocal training, recording and songwriting to hone his skills as a professional singer.
- At age 10, Ruel auditioned for Die Voice Kids by broadcasting a videotape and was selected for the first round. However, during the next round of auditions, he was forced to sing a rendition of I’m Still Calling Home in Australia with a chorus of children. The group was unsuccessful in their attempt.
- He released his debut single, Golden Years in April 2017.
- In June 2017, Ruel appeared on Australian radio station Triple J’s weekly segment. Like a version. He sang Weathered by Jack Garratt, making his live radio debut and also becoming the youngest performer to be featured in the segment. The video generated a lot of interest and was viewed over half a million times in less than 48 hours.
- In September 2017, Elton John performed Ruel ‘s Don’t Tell Me which helped Ruel grow his fan base.
