RUBY BRIDGES QUOTES
- Don’t follow the path. Go where there is no path and start the trail. When you start a new trail with courage, strength and conviction, the only thing that can stop you is you!
- Racism is an adult disease and we must stop using our children to spread it.
- My message is really that racism has no place in the hearts and minds of our children.
- I know now that experience comes to us for a purpose, and if we follow the direction of the spirit within us, we will probably find the purpose to be good.
- Children don’t know anything about racism. This is taught to them by adults.

EDUCATION AND HISTORY OF RUBY BRIDGES
When Ruby’s family moved to New Orleans, Lousiana, they received a request two years later from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to consider having their child Ruby participate in system integration. school in New Orleans. Many whites at this time disagreed with the government to integrate African American children into white schools.
Violence occurred as a result of which the government forced troops to escort the first nine children known as Little Rock Nine while joining Little Rock Central High School in 1957. As a result , some schools held an entrance exam so that blacks could fail and not attend the schools.

Luckily for Bridges, she was among six black children to pass the entrance exam. Bridges joined the all-white William Frantz Elementary School, three of them joined McDonogh No 19 while two children decided to stay at their old schools. Bridges’ father didn’t entirely agree with the idea that his eldest daughter would be the only African American in a white school. His mother convinced him to accept this idea later.
The young Ruby escorted by federal troops at the age of six
On the first day of Ruby’s enrollment at William Frantz Elementary School, Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals since white parents began protesting. As she walked, people were shouting and throwing things at them, but she showed great courage and walked past them.
As soon as she entered the school, the white parents took their children away and all the teachers refused to teach Ruby except for a teacher named Barbara Henry. That day, it was chaos that forced her to stay in the principal’s office. After a few days, some white parents began taking their children to school as the protests began to subside.
Although some white parents had already agreed to let their children learn with a black child, some continued to threaten to put poison in her food, which forced her to eat only food from home. She learned on her own for almost a year with Barbara Henry.
Ruby’s parents also suffered because she joined William Frantz Elementary School. Her father lost his job as a gas station attendant, no one would sell them groceries, the land where her grandparents farmed was taken away from them, and her parents eventually separated. Earlier his community started showing love to his family as his father was offered a new job and others watched their home and escorted him to school with the Federal Marshals to protect them from protesters .
