  2. Shortly after his birth, the whole family moved to Amos, Quebec, Canada and stayed there until Roy was 11 years old.
  3. When he was 13, his family moved to Kapuskasing, Ontario to start Canada Packers’ business. There he learned to speak and write English.
  4. When he was 14, his parents divorced and he moved to Sainte-Rose, Laval, Quebec with his mother, younger brother and an older sister.
  5. His mother was a piano teacher, but Roy learned the cello from a young age and had the opportunity to play it in some of his television and film roles.
  6. Roy’s first choice in his career wasn’t acting at all. In fact, he studied physics in high school, but after seeing the film Molière (1978), directed and screenplayed by Ariane Mnouchkine, lit a spark in him.
  7. Roy accidentally started acting after one of his friends at the National Theater School of Canada asked him to help her with her lines for a play. A few days later, another friend of the girl, Stefen Labelle, withdrew from auditioning for the play at the last minute, but had the same date and time as the girl, after which he stepped in at the urging of his girlfriend.
  8. Roy presented himself as essentially Stefen, and impressed the play’s director, but was quickly identified because the picture of the real Stefen revealed that he was African-American with Afro-hair, making the impersonation easily detectable and highly illegal. However, the principal told Roy to enroll if he really wanted to go to school and not tell anyone how he started if he was accepted, which he did.
  9. He went from almost total anonymity to superstardom when he starred in the drama film Les Filles de Caleb in 1990, which was seen by 80% of Quebec’s population.
  10. Roy was chosen to play the role of Maurice “Rocket” Richard because he bears a strong physical resemblance to him. He starred in a biographical TV performance called The Rocket in 1999 before starring in a popular hockey film The Rocket in 2005.

  12. He won a 2008 Jutra Award for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” for his role in Shaking Hands with the Devil (2007) as well as a Canadian Award at the 2007 Atlantic Film Festival for “Best Actor”.
  13. His love of mountains, forests and lakes originated in the Abitibi region, a desolate natural area about 800 kilometers from Montreal, where he lived as a child. After a successful career, Roy moved to the countryside near Quebec and began restoring a circa 1840 farmhouse out of a passion and interest in renovating antiques.
  14. In 2005 he began restoring used sailboats and bringing them back to their former glory. He also took lessons in water navigation and began going on various adventures.
  15. Jon Cassar, the producer of the popular TV series 24 (2001-2010) offered Roy a role in season 5 alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Elisha Cuthbert, but he turned it down.
