Roy Bryant (born January 24, 1931 – died September 1, 1994) was an American store owner and former soldier from Money, Mississippi. He and his half brother From him JW Milam kidnapped, tortured and murdered Emmet Till. Also, he was a 14-year-old African-American boy who was from Chicago.

This incident sparked protests and also influenced the African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968). What’s more, Carolyn Donham (Roy’s ex-wife) was also infamous for her role in the murder.

On January 26, 2017, Carolyn admitted that what she said at her trial back in 1955 was not true. The 82-year-old woman made the admission in the book ” The Blood of Emmett Till ” by author Timothy Tyson in 2007.

Full Story of the Emmet Till Murder Case

Roy and Carolyn owned a small Bryant’s Meat and Grocery Market in Money, Mississippi. Until (14 years old) he skipped morning church and went to Bryant’s grocery store for gum on August 24, 1955. Later, Bryant and his stepbrother murdered him on August 28, 1955.

Also, Carolyn at her trial said the boy grabbed her, flirted with her and also threatened her. She later added that Emmet also said, “How about a date, baby?” her while she pays the bill.

When her husband found out about the story, he wanted revenge. Therefore, Roy abducted Emmet when she was sleeping at her relative’s house at 2:30 am on August 28 in Money, Mississippi. Later, due to white supremacy at the time, neither Bryant was ever convicted of a crime or served jail time.

On September 1, 1994, Roy died at the age of 63 due to illness and disease in Ruleville, Sunflower County, Mississippi. His brother JW Milam also died (aged 61) on December 30, 1980 in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi.

Bryant later married his longtime girlfriend “ Vera Jo Orman Bryant (2nd spouse)”. The couple remained together until Roy’s last breath. Vera died on May 2, 2012, at the age of 79.
