Atkinson’s career started with radio comedy shows for BBC Radio 3 in 1979 titled “The Atkinson People”. The show consisted of interviews with fictional characters played by Atkinson himself. It was also co-written by him alongside Richard Curtis.
The comedian’s switch from radio to Tv did not take up to one year as he went on to create a one-off pilot for London Weekend Television titled “Canned Laughter” in the same year. After his Television break, he featured in televised skits with top performers like Elton John, Kate Bush, and John Cleese (Beekeeping). He also performed solo skits on Television at various British events.
Atkinson is best known for his character as Mr. Bean, however, part of his big break story was BBC’s 1979 “Not the Nine O’Clock News” produced by his friend, John Lloyd. He was a main sketch writer for the show and starred alongside personalities like Pamela Stephenson, Griff Rhys Jones, and Mel Smith.
The success of “Not the Nine O’Clock News” led to his feature on one of the best British comedy shows of its time- “The Black Adder”.
