The Manchester United Star, Cristiano Ronaldo and the Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandoski, won big at the Just concluded 2021 FIFA awards.

FIFA honoured Cristiano Ronaldo for becoming the all-time leading goalscorer at the international level. He received a special in-person award and was also named in the FIFPRO Men’s World11 for 2021, at what was largely a virtual ceremony for FIFA’s The Best ceremony in Zurich on Monday.

“It’s a dream. First of all, I have to say thank you to my teammates, especially in the national team during the last 20 years that I used to play with. I never thought of beating that record,” Ronaldo said.

“I have to say thank you to my family, my wife, my kids – soon I will be a father again! I’m really proud. It’s a great achievement to be the top scorer of all time.”

Lewandoski, on his own part, was named the top men’s player at FIFA’s ‘The Best’ awards for the second year in a row ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Lionel Messi.

The Bayern Munich striker retained the award he picked up last year following a prolific 2021 performance for the Bundesliga giants.

Lewandowski said: ‘Thank you very much. I am very honoured to win this trophy and feel proud. I know it belongs to my team-mates and coaches. We all work hard to win the games. It is special to work with these guys around me.

‘I never dream about breaking this record [of Gerd Muller’s]. To score 41 in 29 games – if you ask me that a few years ago if it is possible I would tell you it is impossible. I also say to him thank-you. He set so many records and to me it was always the next step to try and break it.’

Other Winners of the 2021 FIFA Awards include Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy who won the best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper, his club coach Thomas Tuchel, also won the Best Men’s Coach while Emma Hayes won the Best FIFA Women’s Coach

Alexia Putellas won the Best Women’s Player of the Year, Christine Sinclair won the women’s special award, Christiane Endler won the Best Women’s Goalkeeper,

The Sevilla player, Erik Lamela, won the Puskas Award, the Denmark National team and medical team win the FIFA Fair Play Award and the Best FIFA Fan Award alongside Finland
