Ron Howard
Sometimes his movies seem to be shot with angelic talent ( Challenge. Frost vs. Nixon , Cinderella Man ), and before long he’s shooting a demonic mess ( The Da Vinci Code , EDtv , The Grinch ). He’s much better at movies based on true events, and he’s an expert at staying on the borderline of maudlin. Son, brother and father of actors, Ron Howard has gone from being a second-rate actor to being one of the most important directors in Hollywood.
Born on March 1, 1954 in Duncan, Oklahoma, Ronald William Howard is the son of actress Jean Speegle Howard, and Rance Howard , actor, screenwriter and director. It is not particularly strange that the boy followed his father’s tradition, and at the age of two he was already on stage. At five he made his film debut, as Ronnie Howard, with a major supporting role in Red Sunset , opposite Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner . That same year he also appeared in numerous series, such as In the limits of reality , Lassie and Bonanza . Thus, he was already a veteran when he was recruited at the age of 9 by Vincente Minnelli himself.to play the boy referred to in the title of Eddie’s father’s courtship , who after being orphaned, encourages his father – none other than Glenn Ford – to find a new partner. And despite so much upheaval, his parents ensured that he had a fairly normal childhood, since he attended the public school where he practiced his favorite sport: baseball. He thought that despite so much experience, he lacked training as an actor, so he finally ended up enrolling in drama at the University of California.
Although many child prodigies fail to replicate their success when they grow up, Howard was recruited at the age of 19 to star opposite Richard Dreyfuss in American Graffiti , a nostalgic drama that takes place in 1962 about a group of students celebrating the end of the year throughout of a very hectic night. Ron Howard himself returned to embody his character in More American Graffiti , an dispensable sequel where Richard Dreyfuss was no longer there. Ronnie Howard was also one of the protagonists of The Last Gunslinger , final point to the valuable and extensive filmography of John Wayne. Thus, it is possible that Howard would have continued to accumulate an extensive filmography as an actor. He did not lack work, as he starred in the Happy Days series until 1984. However, he longed to become a director, and from a very young age he had shot his home shorts. He made his debut as a feature filmmaker by the hand of the king of series B, Roger Corman , who produced the comedy Crazy Escape to Las Vegas , where Howard was also the protagonist; Shortly after, he decided to end his acting career and focus on directing, except for a brief occasional role.
In 1975, Howard had married actress Cheryl Alley. With her he has had four children, including Bryce Dallas Howard , the protagonist of The Forest . Although his debut had gone largely unnoticed, he had better fortune with the comedy The Night Shift , about two guys who work nights at a mortuary. And he had an even bigger impact with 1, 2, 3 Splash , his first job with Tom Hanks , where Daryl Hannah played a mermaid. In his first stage, Howard seems to be highly influenced by the style of Steven Spielberg , whom he imitated to the millimeter in Cocoon ., a film of aliens in a friendly tone, very reminiscent of Encounters in the third kind and other science fiction works of King Midas. Following the comedy Treadmill , Howard directed Willow , an adventure film that seems inspired by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , but with a lone dwarf who has to protect an abandoned baby princess, hunted by the wicked witch sorceress. It produced George Lucas , who was also the author of the original story.
From adventure he returns to comedy ( Sweet Home… Sometimes! ), he goes on to a firefighter thriller ( Flare ), and from there to a correct tape of journalists ( The Paper. Behind the news ). But the director shines especially with Apollo 13 , a reconstruction of one of the most complicated missions into space, which Howard knows how to make exciting, and also achieves a dramatic entity superior to that of his previous films. Nominated for nine Oscars, she only achieved two minor ones (sound and editing). Many years later he would captivate the Academy, which awarded him four important Oscars for A Beautiful Mind., also based on a true story, since it reconstructed the life of the mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr., a Nobel Prize winner who suffered from schizophrenia.
Although Howard is capable of shooting a low-key but effective thriller like Ransom , he usually directs either notable movies or outright flops. For his detractors, Howard is a bad director, who despite having given the bell sometime, deep down is responsible for the discreet western Disappearances , and rubbish like EDtv , The Grinch or The Da Vinci Code -again with Tom Hanks – boring adaptation of the most successful best-seller of recent times, written by Dan Brown . For his part, his defenders can wield Cinderella Man , one of his best works, about a boxer who rose to prominence during the Great Depression. EITHERThe challenge. Frost vs. Nixon , which recounts the historic interview that British David Frost had with former US President Richard Nixon, for television. Very shortly after dazzling the critics with this film, he released the disastrous Angels and Demons , a new foray into the Brown universe, which despite being a blockbuster, did not quite convince.
