The broadcaster was born on November 23, 1960 as Robin René Roberts in Tuskegee, Alabama, USA. She is the daughter of parents: Lucimarian and Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts. She has three older siblings: Sally-Ann, Lawrence, Jr. (nicknamed Butch) and Dorothy. Further, shegrew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi, where she attended Pass Christian High School and graduated in the class of 1979 salutatorian. During her high school years, she had played basketball and tennis, among other sports.

From 1988 to 1990, she became an anchor/reporter for WAGA-TV in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1990 she joined ESPN as a sportscaster and worked until 2005. In 1995 she also worked as a featured reporter for ABC News’ Good Morning America. She was a guest host on Jeopardy! for five episodes in 2021 following the death of Alex Trebek in November 2020.
