Robin Li Yanhong, born on November 17, 1968, in Yangquan, Shanxi, China, hails from a family of five siblings. He pursued his bachelor’s in information management at Peking University, later completing his master’s at the University at Buffalo.
Initially aiming for a doctoral degree, he concluded his studies in 1994 with a master’s.
Career
Li joined IDD Information Services, a division of Dow Jones, and helped create software for The Wall Street Journal’s online edition. He also worked on search engine algorithms. He stayed there until June 1997. While at IDD, he developed the Rankdex site-scoring algorithm. Google patented a similar algorithm in 1998. Li later applied Rankdex to create the Baidu search engine.
Afterward, Li worked at Infoseek, a pioneering search engine, until December 1999. He introduced a picture search function for Go.com. In January 2000, he founded Baidu, which now dominates the Chinese search market and is the world’s second-largest independent search engine. Baidu went public in 2005 and joined the NASDAQ-100 Index in 2007.
Li received several accolades for his contributions to technology and innovation in China. In 2014, the United Nations Secretary-General appointed him as co-chair of the Independent Expert Advisory Group on Data Revolution for Sustainable Development.
