STATEMENT BY ROBERT L. JOHNSON

BET founder Robert Johnson, America’s first black billionaire, calls for $14 trillion in reparations to ‘put the descendants of slaves on equal footing with this nation’

“Wealth transfer is exactly what we need,” Johnson told CNBC. ‘Think about it. For over 200 years of slavery, labor taken without compensation is a transfer of wealth. The denial of access to education, which is the primary driver of income and wealth accumulation, is a transfer of wealth. »

The United States has debated compensation for slaves and their descendants since the Civil War, and it became a key issue during the Democratic presidential primaries in late 2019, Business Insider reported. However, a March 2019 INSIDER poll found that about 25% of Americans would support providing “financial compensation and government assistance” to descendants of slaves.

Johnson’s most recent call for reparations comes as the United States faces a national toll of systemic racism sparked by the recent murders of three African Americans. Ahmaud Arbery , Breonna Taylor , and George Floyd . At the same time, black Americans are dying at disproportionately high rates from the novel coronavirus.

Johnson, 74, became the first African American to appear on Forbes’ billionaires list in 2001, CNBC reported. Nearly two decades later, only six of the nearly 600 Americans on this list are black: Jay Z , Kanye West , Michael Jordan , Oprah Winfrey, David Steward , and Robert F. Smith . Johnson fell off the billionaire list in 2009 when the stock price of BET’s new owner, Viacom, plummeted.

“If we take this big step forward, I am convinced that the problems we face today can be solved. But it takes bold, ambitious action, and $14 trillion in reparations for damages suffered by slave heirs is an apt statement.”
