- He was a member of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and taught for 2 years under Sanford Meisner along with Dustin Hoffman, James Caan and Gene Hackman who were his classmates.
- After graduating in 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for nearly two years with the rank of private first class and received the National Defense Service Medal for his service.
