Biography

Rita Ora was born in Pristina, SFR Yugoslavia (now Kosovo) on the 26th of November, 1990. Her mother, Vera, is a psychiatrist and her father, Besnik Sahatçiu, is a pub owner; they are both Albanian. While moving to London, Rita Ora’s parents added “Ora” to her name so it could be easily pronounced compared to her birth name which was Rita Sahatçiu. Ora was an addition to the family surname and it means “time” in Albanian.

For political reasons, Rita Ora’s family left Kosovo for London in 1991, when Rita Ora was still a baby. They left because of the persecution of Albanians initiated with the disintegration of Yugoslavia. Rita Ora grew up in Notting Hill in West London and attended a performing arts school, Sylvia Young Theatre School.

Rita Ora initially started performing at open mic sessions around London, and occasionally, she performs in her father’s pub too. In 2008, she auditioned for Eurovision: Your Country Needs You on BBC One to be the British contestant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 and qualified. However, she withdrew from the competition after a few episodes on claims that she didn’t feel she was ready and she thought that the challenge wasn’t for her.

Soon afterwards, Rita Ora’s management got in touch with Roc Nation. She, fortunately, signed a recording deal and a publishing deal with the Americal Record Label in December 2008, emerging as one of their first signees. In 2009, she made a cameo appearance in Jay Z’s video for Young Forever, she also recorded an album that the label advised against its release. Split From Roc Nation

In December 2015, Rita Ora filed a lawsuit against Roc Nation, citing that the contract she signed is “unenforceable”, due to California’s “seven-year rule” and she sought for release. Furthermore, the complaint stated that she was only permitted to release one album despite creating multiple additional records for release. Also, it stated that her relationship with the label is “irrevocably damaged”. In reaction to this, Roc Nation also filed a counter-lawsuit against her in January 2016 for breaking her recording contract in New York. Finally, in May 2016, they reached a settlement.

A report came in 2016 that she signed a new record deal with Atlantic Records. And on the 3rd of September 2016, she performed in a concert at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, in Rome, at the vigil for Mother Teresa’s canonisation. With the engagement of other Albanian artists, accompanied by the Kosovo Philarmonic Orchestra.

In April 2019, Rita Ora released the song Carry On with Norwegian producer Kygo. It was released as a standalone single for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, a film she featured in taking a minor role. On 31st May, she released the song, Ritual with Tiësto and Jonas Blue.

In September 2019, Rita Ora confirmed to Marie Claire that she had begun working on her third studio album. At the age of 13, Rita Ora made her first appearnace in an episode of the British drama series, The Brief. Soon afterwards, she appeared in the British film, Spivs (2004). In April 2014, she appeared an episode of Girl, You Better Walk alongside Korean Popstar, Hyuna. And in 2015, she played Mia, Christian Grey’s sister in the Fifty Shades series. She also played the Artful Dodger in the 2021 film, Twist.

In 2017, she was announced to star in the Disney+ prequel, Beauty and The Beast, but the project has been put on hold indefinitely ever since.

Other Ventures

In 2010, Rita Ora featured in a commercial for Skullcandy headphones. And she has afterwards gotten several endorsement deals with famous brands such as Calvin Klein, Material Girl, various cosmetics brands, Coca-Cola and Samsung Galaxy, and so on.
