In his thirties, Zumwalt was heavily dependent on alcohol and became a full-fledged alcoholic. He sobered up at forty, but the culmination of the hard life he lived led to an early death.
Rick Zumwalt passed away on March 19, 2003 in Desert Hot Springs, California at the age of 51. He died of a sudden and fatal heart attack. He is survived by his brother Mark, two children and a grandson.
