The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has embarked on a nationwide strike, as promised

It was earlier reported that the National Association of Resident Doctors had promised to embark on an indefinite strike from April 1, if the salaries and allowances of members were not paid.

The association gave its threat in an internal memo dated March 18, 2021, which was jointly signed by its President, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, and Secretary-General, Dr. Jerry Isogun.

The memo stated that doctors were asked to prepare financially and mentally for the indefinite strike which is based on the failure of the government to implement certain agreements.

However, The Federal Government appealed to the association on Wednesday,  to suspend their plan of embarking on a National Strike.

The Minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige. who had a meeting with the doctors on Wednesday begged them to reconsider their stance as the entire world is still battling the Covid-19 Pandemic.

But speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, The association’s president, Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, noted that the strike commenced at 8 am on Thursday.

He also enjoined other resident doctors to join the strike

“The strike commenced 8 am, and we enjoin all resident doctors to start the strike immediately,” he said.

“We had a meeting with the minister of labour from 4 pm to about 12 am this morning, but as it stands; we have been used to memorandum of understandings for over a decade now, and we insist on the implementation of what we wrote on our strike message.

“We’re not just doing this for resident doctors, we’re doing this for all heath workers.”
