1. In February 2011, he signed a contract extension with Linse , which extended his stay at the club to 2015. However, it was widely seen as an attempt by the French club to secure a sizable fee for his upcoming transfer.

In the summer of 2011, he was courted by some of the leading clubs including Manchester United and Real Madrid. He decided to join the Spanish club when French legend Zinedine Zidane, who worked as a club advisor, managed to influence Varane. Madrid reportedly paid €10m for his services and offered him a 6-year contract.
