Just like many up-coming sportsmen and women, not much is known about Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, aside from the records and moments, she made the country proud.
In 2019, she represented Nigeria at the African Games held in Rabat, Morocco and she won the gold medal in the women’s 59 kg event. She also won the gold medal in both the Snatch and Clean & Jerk events and set a new African record of 93 kg in the Snatch event
Rafiatu also competed in the women’s 59 kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she finished in 6th place. She however made up for it by winning the gold medals at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and the 2021 African Weightlifting Championships in Kenya.
As earlier stated Rafiatu Lawal won Team Nigeria’s second gold medal in the women’s 59kg category of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She clinched gold by lifting a combined total lift of 206kg – 110kg in snatch and 116kg in Clean and Jerk- to win the women’s 59kg weightlifting event and also set a new Commonwealth Games record.
Rafiatu successfully lifted 90 kg in her first attempt, set a Commonwealth Games record, and went right on top of the standings in Snatch. Though, she failed to lift 94kg in her second attempt and went for 95kg in her third attempt.
