The star made her acting debut in the first Canadian production of Miss Saigon in Toronto and as ‘The Enchantress’ in the Canadian production of Disney’s Beauty And The Beast.
She went on to appear in several other stage productions, such as Once On This Island, Goblin Market, and the debut performance of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Las Meninas, Lynn Nottage. She moved to Los Angeles, THE USES, during her time here she appeared in numerous guest star roles on television series. Frustrated with some of the roles available to her at the time, Lutrell at one point considered giving up her acting career.
She enrolled at UCLA to study architecture. Lutrell instead ventured to the UK and studied at the British American Drama Association on a summer course at Balliol College, Oxford. Shortly after returning to Los Angeles, Luttrell was cast in her highest profile role yet, as Teyla Emmagan on Stargate Atlantis. She was also featured in the Canadian film A Dog’s Breakfast which was directed by fellow Stargate Atlantis co-star David Hewlett.
