RACHAEL RAY’S KITCHEN
Ray, who favors a ‘quick and easy’ style of cooking, teaches many basic recipes that she says can be finished in 30 minutes or less, despite experts claiming her concept doesn’t include time of preparation.
She says her Sicilian maternal grandfather, Emmanuel Scuderi, and her Cajun ancestry both have a big impact on her cooking. Ray uses ingredients such as fresh herbs, garlic, and chicken broth to enhance flavors, and feels the measure “takes away the creative and hands-on process of cooking.” She prefers approximations such as “2 pan swirl” or “half a palmful” instead.
To criticism of his alternate route methods, Ray responds, “I don’t have anything formal. I am totally unqualified for any job I have ever had. She also repeatedly said, “I’m not a chef.”
In his television programs, Ray has used slogans such as “EVOO” (extra virgin olive oil), “yum-o”, “GB” (garbage), “Oh my sauce!”, “entreetizer” (entree of the size of a starter), “clam” (a cross between a soup and a stew) and “choup” (thicker than a soup but thinner than a chowder). In 2007, the Oxford American College Dictionary reported the expansion of the term EVOO, short for extra virgin olive oil, which Ray had helped popularize, and acknowledged it coining the phrase.
Burgers are one of Ray’s specialties. She dedicated one of her distributed works to the subject, The Book of Burger.
RACHAEL RAY NUTRISH
In July 2008, Ray’s “Nutrish” pet food was introduced. The dog food is prepared using recipes developed by Ray for his pit bull, “Isaboo”. All proceeds from the sale of these items go to Rachael’s Rescue, a foundation Ray set up specifically to help at-risk animals.

RACHAEL RAY’S 30 MINUTE MEAL
Ray attributes the idea of 30-minute meals to her experience working at the store, where she encountered people who were hesitant to cook. She encouraged a class in which she demonstrated the best way to prepare meals in less than 30 minutes.
With the successful completion of his “30 Minute Meal” classes, WRGB, the local CBS-TV affiliate, asked him to appear in a weekly segment of their newscasts. This, along with a public radio show and the distribution of his first book, led to a spot for the Today show and his first Food Network contract in 2001.
