Qatar 2022: Real reason why Onana was left out of squad to face Serbia
The Cameroon Football Federation has released an official memo, on why Andre Onana was left out of squad to face Serbia in their second match at the FIFA Qatar World Cup 2022.
The memo reads:
Onana had earlier donned the glove in the Indomitable Lions group G clash against Switzerland, which the swiss won 1 – 0, but was not listed in the squad for their 3-3 draw against Serbia with Devis Epassy replacing him in goal.
It later emerged that Onana was no longer in Qatar and had left Cameroon’s camp after a disagreement with Head coach Rigobert Song.
What Rigobert Song said about Onana
Cameroon boss Song said after the match with Serbia that Onana had asked to be left out of the team on Monday.
“He is an important player, but we are in a difficult tournament,” Song told reporters.
“I know what I have to do, and that is to ensure that the team takes precedence over any individuals. Andre wanted to step out and we accepted that position. In a squad, discipline is important.”
But the manager denied claims that Onana will leave Qatar and suggested he could return to the squad.
“For the time being I have asked him to wait – to see if is going to stay with us. I have asked him to respect the rules and maybe come back into the squad,” he added.
