Bulk Energy Trading PLC in Nigeria had plans to increase its capacity for supplying electricity to 5,500 Megawatts (MW) by 2023.

This was stated on Wednesday in Lagos that at the 2nd Capacity Workshop for Power Correspondents, Civil Society, and other Stakeholders by its Managing Director (MD), Mr. Nnaemeka Ewelukwa.

The idea has the support of Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, according to NBET.

According to the NBET Chief, the repositioning will enable and facilitate the market and accelerate market growth to the point of “self-sustaining.

”NBET is putting in a place a lot of initiatives that will improve power supply in the country.

”Under the first phase of such initiatives, it is expected that the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry will be able to generate , transmit and distribute 5, 500 MW and this power will be paid for.

”Following the success of this trial phase. a further 1,000 MW will be added to the activated contracts in the following year bringing the total to 6,500MW.

”This will improve capacity  of the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) on incremental basis.”

According to Ewelukwa, NBET will also set up a thorough data hub that will offer vital details on electricity and gas users as well as their specific locations around the nation.

A number of energy brokers will play a crucial role in connecting energy suppliers and customers who have registered on the platform, he added, and this will also promote bilateral trading between Independent Power Plants (IPP) and commercial and industrial customers through an automated energy trading platform or exchange.

Additionally, Nigeria’s electricity minister, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, announced that Nigeria and China would collaborate on renewable energy projects.

The deputy director-general of the institute, Mr. Gu Hongbin, led a delegation from the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI), according to the minister’s report from that meeting.

Both parties discussed future collaboration between Nigeria and the institute during the visit. Mr. Hongbin wanted to work with Nigeria on capacity-building and research projects. However, in order to implement Nigeria’s energy transition plan, Engr. Aliyu requested cooperation from the institute.
