Pope Francis suffers stomach pain, to undergo surgery on his intestines
The 86-year-old pontiff will be placed under general anesthesia for the procedure, which aims to address a recurring and increasingly painful constriction of his intestine.
Pope Francis is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday afternoon at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to stomach pains he has been experiencing, as revealed by the Vatican. The 86-year-old pontiff will be placed under general anesthesia for the procedure, which aims to address a recurring and increasingly painful constriction of his intestine. Following the surgery, it is expected that he will remain in the hospital for several days to recover.
This surgical intervention comes two years after Pope Francis underwent a procedure to remove 13 inches of his colon, as he was dealing with inflammation and narrowing of the large intestine.
Today, after his weekly audience at the Vatican, the pontiff will undergo surgery on his abdominal wall. Yesterday, he had a 40-minute check-up at Gemelli Hospital after experiencing stomach pains, which prompted the medical team to determine that intervention was necessary.
According to a report gathered from Dailymail, Pope Francis who is the head of the Catholic Church as well as the Vatican City, has been having struggled with health problems throughout his life, starting from his early adulthood when he was hit hard by a severe condition.
“At the age of 21, he developed pleurisy, which is the inflammation of the tissue that surrounds the lungs and the ribcage. It was an incredibly serious situation, and he was on the verge of losing his life. The doctors had to perform surgery to remove multiple cysts in his lungs and a small portion of his upper right lung, as described by the pope’s biographer”, Austen Ivereigh.
