A manhunt for the abducted students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and other passengers has been launched.
According to a statement by the Enugu State Police spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the kidnappers demanded N300 million as ransom from the parents of the abductees.
Recall that some students of the institution were abducted along Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road on Sunday while traveling to school following the resumption of academic activities after the ASUU strike was called off recently.
The statement however revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani has deployed security personnel to the area where the abduction took place in order to save the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
At the moment, the total number of abducted persons in the incident is yet to be ascertained and reorts gathered by The Punch showed that a former Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Dr Dan Shere, was among the kidnapped victims.
In an audio conversation between the family of a victim and the abductors, the kidnappers were heard threatening to “waste” (kill) the victims if the family refuses to pay the ransom.
They said: “If you don’t have money to pay for ransom you better tell us so that we waste them and look for new business.”
The spokesman for the University, Chief Okwun Omeaku, revealed that the university had not received any report from the families, students, or the police.
