American Idol season 11 winner Phillip Phillips is a popular American singer-songwriter. His coronation song ‘ Home’ is his debut single that he released after his victory. In 2012, he debuted his album, The World from the Moonside . He has two other albums, Detrás de la luz and Collateral . He acted in an episode of Hawaii Five-0 . Phillips has made millions from his career as a musician.

Phillips is married to his longtime girlfriend, Hannah Blackwell . The couple have no children yet.

Early age and education

Phillip Phillips was born as Phillip LaDon Phillips Jr. on September 20, 1990 in Albany, Georgia. He is an American by nationality and is of white ethnicity. He was raised by his parents, Phillip LaDon ‘Donnie’ Phillips, Sr., and Sheryl with his two sisters, LaDonna Uric and Lacey Neil . When Phillips was 12 years old, he and his family moved to Leesburg, Georgia.

Phillips attended Lee County High School. He graduated with a major in Industrial Systems Technology from Albany Technical College, but was unable to attend the graduation ceremony due to his American Idol obligations. When he was young, he used to work in his family’s pawn shop.

At the age of 14, Phillips began to play the guitar. His old friend and brother-in-law Benjamin Neil guided him to pursue a career in music. In 2009, along with Neil and Todd Urick , his other brother-in-law formed the Phillip Phillips Band and performed at various local events and venues.

A year later, Phillips won a local singing contest, Star of Albany .

Phillips auditioned for American Idol , Season 11 in Savannah, Georgia, where Stevie Wonder sang Is Superstition . She then performed Thriller by Michael Jackson before judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez , and Steven Tyler while being asked to sing a second song. On the show, Phillips’ style was compared to Dave Matthews .

He was taken to the doctor for a possible kidney stone after top 13 night. He underwent eight procedures and considered leaving the program due to pain. But he made it to the end and won the show by competing against his fellow finalist. Jessica Sánchez with record breaking 132 million votes.

In the finale, she sang her debut single, Home , her crowning song. The single peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold millions of copies.

Music career after American Idol

After winning the title on American Idol Season 11, Phillips went on the American Idol LIVE Tour with the top 10 contestants on the show. She has also performed on various shows including- The Today Show , Good Morning America Concert Series , Jimmy Kimmel Live! , Late Show with David Letterman , Live with Kelly and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno among others.

On November 9, 2012, Phillips released his debut album, The World from the Side of the Moon produced by Gregg Wattenberg . The album reached #4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2013. The same year, she appeared on the cover of Billboard magazine with Jimmy Iovine , Interscope Records founder and CEO and mentor of American Idol. She then toured North America as the opening act for Matchbox Twenty .

On May 19, 2014, Phillips released his second studio album, Behind the Light . The debut single from the album, Remote Fire was released on March 3, 2014. That same year, she received a BMI Award for Pop Songwriting for the single. The album peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard 200.

In the summer of 2014, Phillips toured with O.AR (of a revolution) , an American band. A year later, he filed a lawsuit against his record label. 19 recordings , calling the producers oppressive and manipulative. In 2017, he settled the dispute with the producers.

On April 7, 2016, Phillips returned to the American Idol stage for the series finale. In the end, she paid tribute to David Bowie with four other White Boy With Guitar (WGWG) winners Kris Allen , Lee Dewyze , Nick Fradiani and David Cook .

Simon Cowell, the former American Idol judge, mentioned that Phillips was the only contestant he liked after leaving the show. On June 17, 2016, he co-headlined the tour at the San Diego County Fair with Matt Nathanson .

On January 19, 2018, Phillips released his third and final studio album, Collateral produced by Ryan Hadlock . From early February to April, she launched The Magnetic Tour to support her album.

Charity

Phillips is a supporter of various organizations including the National Park Foundation, NCIRE, the Veterans Health Research Institute, and Save The Music Foundations, among others. He helped raise money for organizations including the Gibson Flood Relief Campaigns and the Sarah Foundations through his talents. He has been an ambassador for Brave Beginning.

On October 24, 2012, he raised funds for those affected by Hurricane Sandy with the PS22 Choir from a concert.

Personal life

Phillip Phillips married his longtime girlfriend Hannah Blackwell on October 24, 2015 at Resora Plantation in Albany, Georgia. The ceremony was attended by almost 250 guests, including families and close friends.

The couple first met in 2008 at an event for her sister’s charity, Mission Change . Phillips opened up about his relationship with his current wife to American Idol Host Ryan Seacrest after the show’s finale. On December 26, 2014, the couple announced their engagement via social media. He wrote on his facebook,

My best Christmas surprise is happening. We are committed to all of you! @HannahBlackwell!

Whereas, his wife showed off his engagement ring on her Instagram with a caption,

I have dreamed of this for over 20 years. I’ve been dreaming of this guy for so long. Overwhelmed with happiness. @philphil.

The couple lives happily together. Even after years of marriage, they still have no children.

During American Idol, he suffered from congenital kidney disease that causes stones. She underwent several surgeries and procedures. Shortly after the show, she had her kidney stones removed and she also underwent reconstructive surgery on her kidneys.
