- She had a difficult childhood like her mother, she was diagnosed with bipolar illness and her father struggled with illness and financial problems. Apparently her father went bankrupt after people stopped wearing pantyhose.
- During her childhood, she was diagnosed with severe dyslexia, which forced her to drop out of her primary school reading and math classes. She also developed an eating disorder during her adolescence.
- She was very fond of ballet growing up but had to give it up at the age of 14 after dislocating her knee.
- Her groundbreaking photo featured three of her sister’s friends sitting on the bed chatting while one of them smokes. She had clicked the image with a 35mm film camera she had borrowed from the school.
- When she started, Ryan McGinley was her inspiration. In 2013, she finally met him at a gay bar in Toronto. He later made her one of his models.
- In 2013 she curated an art exhibition called Gynolandscape and was able to persuade American Apparel to sponsor it and in return she designed a t-shirt with menstruating V*Gina, which caused a huge controversy.
- She was kicked off Instagram after posting a selfie that showed a hint of pubic hair. The incident prompted a major debate about censorship rules.
- In 2011 she launched a website called The Ardorous (theardorous.com), an online collective of talented female artists that offers them an exclusive opportunity to showcase their work.
- Earlier in her career, she had created a fake email address that she used to communicate as a manager. She used this hack to get more respect and better projects.
- After dropping out of college, she packed two negative suitcases and moved to New York to seek better career opportunities.
- In June 2015, Petra published her art book, Baby, which featured work by over 30 photographers alongside her work.
